The startled Fulwiler was, nonetheless, pleased to have found both the source of trouble and his evening’s dinner. Cameron Lake is found in Cal Young Park in east Abilene and is crossed by a bridge along East South Eleventh Street. The long, narrow lake just east of Oldham Lane was created in 1883, financed by the issuance of a $10,000 city bond. A small rock dam was put up across Lytle Creek just south of the railroad tracks. For the first two years, water was hauled from the lake and delivered to barrels outside Abilene homes.

It also contained the tallest swing set I have ever seen. Suspended from an A-frame of welded oilfield pipe, four wooden seats beckoned and beguiled in the Abilene breeze. And not a small one; it would be the largest gift in the school’s history and would be designated for building the centerpiece of the campus.
