In the 1950s and 1960s large orchestras played mento in concerts alongside jazz and American dance music. As with so many of its cultural expressions and artifacts, the origins of Jamaican architectural style are to be found in the interaction of English tradition and African inrerpretation, in this case tempered by the physical environment—topography, materials, and climate.2 The English first built for defense and shelter, not, initially, for grace or style. "It was not unusual," said a mid-eighteenth-century writer, "to see a plantation adorned with a very expensive set of works, of brick and stone, well executed, and the owner residing in a miserable thatched hovel, hastily put together with wattles and plaster, damp, unwholesome, and infested with every species of vermin" (Long 1774).
